Washing Instructions for Sports Kits

How to care for teamwear and keep it match-ready

Proper care of sports kits is essential to maintain performance, appearance, and longevity. Modern teamwear is designed with technical fabrics that support breathability, moisture management, and comfort, but these materials require the right washing approach to perform at their best. Following correct washing instructions also helps protect club colours, sponsor logos, and applied numbers.

Below is a clear guide to best practice when washing football kits, training wear, and other sports apparel.

Wash Before First Use

New kits should be washed before wearing. This removes any residue from the manufacturing and printing process and helps set colours and applied elements.

Turn Garments Inside Out

Always wash kits inside out. This protects badges, names, numbers and sponsor logos from friction during the wash cycle and reduces the risk of peeling or cracking.

Use a Cool Wash

Wash sports kits at 30°C or below. Higher temperatures can damage technical fibres, reduce elasticity, and weaken heat-applied graphics. Cool washes are also more energy efficient and help prevent colour fade.

Avoid Fabric Conditioner

Fabric conditioner should not be used on sportswear. It can clog breathable fabrics and reduce moisture-wicking performance, making garments less effective during training or matches.

Use Mild Detergent Only

Choose a gentle, non-biological detergent. Harsh chemicals and bleach can damage fibres, fade colours, and cause logos or prints to deteriorate prematurely.

Wash Similar Colours Together

To avoid colour transfer, wash light and dark kits separately. This is particularly important for new or brightly coloured garments.

Do Not Tumble Dry

Air drying is strongly recommended. Tumble dryers generate heat that can shrink garments, weaken seams, and cause heat-applied elements to lift or crack. Hang kits naturally and allow them to dry fully.

Do Not Iron Printed Areas

If ironing is necessary, use a low heat setting and avoid direct contact with badges, names, numbers, and logos. Ironing inside out is the safest option.

Store Kits Correctly

Ensure kits are fully dry before storing. Damp storage can lead to odours, mould, and fabric damage. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Looking After Your Teamwear

Correct washing and care significantly extend the life of sports kits and help them look professional throughout the season. Whether it is matchday shirts, training wear, or leisure apparel, following these guidelines will ensure consistent performance and presentation.
