Everything you need to know about the Scottish Youth Cup...

Posted by Christopher Smith on

On the 27th April the Scottish Youth Cup final will take place at Hampden Park in Glasgow between Motherwell & Heart of Midlothian. To celebrate this we thought we'd put together a handy quick-look article of interesting stats and trivia to do with the trophy.

How old is the Scottish Youth Cup?

The trophy began during the 1983/84 season, making this the 33rd year the tournament has taken place.

Who are the most successful clubs in the Scottish Youth Cup?

The first ever tournament was won by Celtic, which was certainly a sign of things to come. The green half of Glasgow have won the trophy an astonishing 14 times in 33 years. Unsurprisingly the other half of Glasgow are the second most successful club, with Rangers lifting the trophy on 6 occasions.

In joint 3rd place are Hearts & Aberdeen, who have both won it 3 times each. If Motherwell manage to win this year it will be their first ever Youth Cup triumph.

What was the biggest win in the final?

In 2011/12 the Celtic side put eight goals past Queen of the South in an 8-0 victory. The final fixture has also seen three 5-3 victories, a 5-2 win and a 4-2. There has only ever been one 0-0 scoreline in the tournament, which was between Dundee Utd & Hibs in 1989/90.

Long story short, this fixture brings out the goals.

Hearts cup history

Hearts have lifted the trophy on 3 occasions, 1993, 1998 and 2000. That means if Hearts are victorious tonight it will be the first time in 16 years.

Key player

Canadian-born Dario Zanatta is a very exciting prospect indeed for the boys in maroon. He has a handful of first team appearances and is well-known for his pace and skill when running on the ball.

Motherwell cup history

Motherwell reached the Youth Cup final in 1987, where they went down swinging in a 2-1 defeat to Celtic. This is only Motherwell's second ever Youth Cup final appearance and would be their first victory should they win it.

Key player

Motherwell's key u20 player is a name many in the Scottish game have been raving about. Dom Thomas was voted the club's player of the season for 2014/15 despite not being a first team regular. He has been compared to James McFadden and is a firm fan-favourite.

Expect lots of direct dribbling, pace and dynamic wing play from the youngster. It's also worth noting that Dom Thomas gets his match boots from ourselves at Football Nation.

Where can I get updates about the match?

We'll be watching and tweeting about the game on our Twitter page @footballnation. The game will also be televised on BBC Alba. The match kicks off at 7.30pm.
