Denis Law - Scotland's Great Capitano.

Posted by Christopher Smith on

Scotland have had a real resurgence in form recently under Gordon Strachan - who'd have thought we'd have a real chance of qualifying for a major tournament any time soon?

It's not just the results that have been good under Gordon, the performances have been gutsy and complimented by attacking football with sequences of short, sharp passing - great stuff.

So in light of tonight's huge game against the Republic of Ireland we thought we'd salute a former general of the national team - the prolific Denis Law.

Despite being made entirely of bronze, Law managed to score 30 goals for Scotland.

Law is perhaps as famous for his backheel goal against former club Manchester United while playing for City as anything else in his career. There's probably never been a goal less-celebrated by a player as it all but ensured United would get relegated that season in 1974.

However, there's no ignoring the man who captained Scotland's impact on the national squad - scoring a phenomenal 30 goals in only 55 caps. That's over 1 goal in every 2 games he played!

When asked, Law claimed one of his greatest memories of playing was the famous 3-2 victory over England in 1967. England were world champions at the time, but Scotland went to Wembley and won thanks to a brilliant performance and a goal from Denis.

Manchester United also won the league that year with Law in the team, however he claimed the win versus England was more satisfying.

According to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp, his parents were huge fans of Denis Law and named the Dutchman after him in tribute. Dutch authorities wouldn't recognise the single n spelling though, hence why Bergkamp's name is spelled differently.

You could be like Bergkamp's parents and pay your respects to Law by naming your son Denis (or your daughter if you're really keen and possibly a bit mental).

However, a far easier and more sensible way of celebrating one of Scotland's greatest goalscorers would be with the Scotland Capitano football shirt - complete with Law's famous number 10 on it. Who knows, it could be an omen for next week's game against England, 3-2 victory prediction anyone?

You've still time to drop in to our Lothian Road store to get one of these for tonight's match, or drop in over the weekend to have it in time for the game vs England next week.
