The romance of the cup: Spartans v Kelty Hearts

Posted by Christopher Smith on

On a misty Scottish summer evening with more than a touch of damp in the air, a first round tie for one of the country's oldest cup competitions was about to kick off. The Qualifying Cup (sponsored by Football Nation) was won last season by Edinburgh's very own Spartans FC, and their challenge tonight was to fend off Kelty Hearts.

This season saw Kelty admitted to the East of Scotland Football League, a competition most expect them to do very well in thanks to a well financially-backed squad.

The match was taking place at Spartans' home ground, Ainslie Park (also the home ground of League 2's Edinburgh City this season). Although the ground is small, with only one mid-length stand, the atmosphere is generated by deeply passionate fans that care greatly about supporting their local team.

As soon as the match kicked off, the pace was frantic as both teams vied for an early advantage.

It was Kelty who made the better start though, dominating the first 10 minutes & then taking an early lead. However, just as it looked as though there was a gulf in class, Spartans equalised with a great team move, followed up quickly with another to take a 2-1 lead.

After adding another to the Spartans' lead with a quick counter attack, the game looked dead & buried. But then, a mix up in defence allowed Kelty the chance to pull a goal back with a virtually empty net to shoot into - it was duly dispatched.

Kelty threw everything at Spartans in the final stages of the game as they chased the goal that would have brought about extra time. Spartans' resolve was strong though & the Edinburgh club & cup holders held strong to go through to the 2nd round.
